[For Christmas in 1906, my grandfather Walter E. DuMond, age 22, was given a diary, and he began to write in it in January. I’m going to include some notes, in brackets like this, to help the reader understand the diaries. Merrickville, where he lived, was a tiny village located about halfway between Franklin and Walton (which are about 14 miles apart), New York, in Delaware County in the foothills of the Catskills.
