Mon. July 1: Pleasant. Did the washing this morning and after dinner finished my green waist. Walked over with Walter to his house about 5 o’clock.
Tue. July 2: Cloudy. Walter and I went to Norwich today it looked like rain but didn’t. We took dinner at Mr. Detys and after dinner looked the town over. Came home on the flier we had a nice time.
[Mr. Detys must have been a restaurant of some kind. An outing for the two of them.]
Wed. July 3: Stayed over to Mr. DuMond’s till 4 o’clock when Walter brought me home. We started for a horse back ride but Ned scart me out so we went as far as Madden’s hill and I got on Flora and Walter rode Ned back and we went for a drive went as far as Armstrong’s and got the mail. We calcalated to ride up to Cora Strong’s if I hadn’t got so nervous.
Thur. July 4: We all took our dinner up on the hill today to eat it . After dinner Ola, Will, Walter, and I, walked over to the tunnel we went through the tunnel twice got rather tired got home about five after chores. Ola rode the wheels down to the office and Walter and I drove down to meet her so if she got tired she could ride. It is the first time she has went so far. We had some fire works in the evening which we all enjoyed. Walter went home at one.
[I don’t know what is meant by the office, although it is mentioned several times, usually in connection with Ola, so maybe she had some kind of job in an office somewhere. Fourth of July picnic and fireworks.]
Fri. July 5: Pleasant. Did up the morning work and went to bed this forenoon sleep until dinner worked on my blue and white lawn dress this afternoon. Mamma and Ola went strawberrying after dinner and I did the dishes. After chores Ola and I worked in the garden and put in some string beans. Helped Mama doctor her chicken for lice. She has about 148 chicken 25 turkeys 47 ducks 6 goslings.
[That would provide some meat for fall—and maybe some animals to sell.]
Sat. July 6: Very warm with shower in evening. Papa and Will white washed the barn today. Fred Nickols helped this afternoon. I finished my lawn dress today. This forenoon I baked three pies two cakes and put salt on the cucumbers weeded the radishes before dinner.
[Salting the cucumbers would have been part of making pickles.]
Sun. July 8: Pleasant. Walter came over today. I walked up as far as the woods to meet him. Papa went to Wells Bridge to see Grandma today and Will went down to Eaton’s. We took our dinner out doors. Walter and I went to church.
[Church was in the afternoon, as it also was at least when I was a child visiting at Plymouth. This made sense for a farm community.]
Mon. July 8: Very warm. We did an awful big washing today we had 9 shirt waists and four skirts beside the usual washing. I layed down this afternoon about 2 and sleep till four. Papa went to Walton today. Ola and I rode a little on the wheel tonight.

I finished the ironing and helped Papa put a tongue in the horserake this forenoon. this afternoon Papa and Mama went to Franklin and after I washed the dinner dishes I layed down for an hour and a half. I have felt about sick today. My throat is so sore and being up last night makes me feel rather old.
Thurs. July 11: Cloudy and rain in afternoon. I went strawberrying this morning and got enough for a quart. Walter came over after the wheel to take to Walton to git fixed and also took my ring and watch chain down to be mended. I sewed this afternoon and some this evening.

Sun. July 14: Walter was over and we went to Sunday school and church a lady from Brooklyn preached her name was Miss Mortin it was very interesting we took our dinner under some trees above the house. I went through the wood to meet Walter.
[A woman preacher! She was probably a missionary home on furlough.]
Mon. July 15: Pleasant. I did the washing today and blistered my hand. Mama went berrying this morning got a milk pail full on stems. I finished my washing about ten and went to raking. We cleared the garden lot and raked another piece today would of got more in but Papa was sick. Walter was over to night to tell me has had a chance to go to Young’s station as night watchman. He goes to work Thursday. Three loads (of hay).
[The beginning of haying, a laborious process at that time. After the hay was cut it had to all be raked up and gotten to the barn, and the whole family worked at it as they were able. Grandpa had a new job prospect.]

Papa don’t feel well today and haven’t helped any we all feel rather tired to night . My throat is awful sore today. It has been so lowry. I have looked for Walter today.
[This is a word I have only heard my grandma say: lowry. She meant cloudy, that is, the sky is “low” with clouds.]
Wed. July 17: Papa went to Walton to see the Dr. today. He feels some better. Mama went with him. She got some lace and ribbon so I have been sewing since dinner. We girls went bathing this afternoon. I done up two quarts of strawberries, one and a half of cherries and some jelly. I picked enough more cherry for a quart after milking and Ola and I pitted them. We haven’t done anything to haying today.

[Whatever bits of land among the hills that grass could be grown on was made use of for hay, and after it was mowed, raked, and taken to the barn (after loading on the wagon, probably with pitchforks), then they had to “rake after,” probably going over the hayed field to get what the initial raking missed.]

[It took the whole family all day to get in three loads of hay.]

Mon. July 22: Cloudy. I started the washing this morning and went over to Dell Grant’s to help. Mrs. Grant is sick. Ola mowed the small lot above the house. That is all we worked in haying.
[When people were sick, neighbors came over to help out. I don’t know what they used to mow the hay at that time. They had some kind of machine, but I don’t know what. But Ola was able to mow a small lot by herself.]

Will, Leon and Jim Eaton went over to DuMond’s to find out about his wheel. Drawed in three loads today.
Thurs. July 25: Fair. We didn’t do anything in haying but mow and Papa did that this afternoon. Will and Leon Fowler went over to Merrickville to see about the wheel. They didn’t go only to Geo. Eaton last night got back nearly twelve and Will didn’t git up till eight.
Fri. July 26: Fair and windy. Papa went to Walton today after some chicken wire. We have lost 13 ducks so are going to build a yard for them. [Will off again, a whole day trip to town just to get tobacco, during haying.]
