Thurs. Oct. 1: Fair showery. Helped Ira Hartwell dig well for Mrs. Wilcox in forenoon. Picked some apples for Mrs. Jackson after dinner then went to work at the well again but it rained us off. I put my bicycle together taped Jessie shoe. Jessie went to North Franklin with her Pa. Pa was here to dinner.
Fri. Oct. 2: Very cold. It was rainy and cold this morning so I did not hurry for work but it brightened up as I walked over to Bill’s and we went down below A. Hunts and put down one sluice and repaired another. Got home at six. Jessie felt good.
Sat. Oct. 3: Fine. Rode my bicycle this morning to work went down almost to A. Hunt’s and took up a sluice. It was awful deep and hard but we got it fixed and started for home at six. Father brought the stove today. Pa and Ma was here and took dinner with Jessie. I did not see them.
Sun. Oct. 4: Fine. Did not get up until eight took a bath dressed for church. Went to church and Sunday School. Read a story to Jessie in afternoon. Jessie and I went walking in evening.
[This is so sweet. Two Sundays in a row now he has read to Grandma in the afternoons.]
Mon. Oct. 5: Fine. Went down below Jim Wardon and put down a sluice fixed the water breaks on Santon Hill and finished the sluice by Edd Clarks. Went up above the village and cleaned the ditch along by Geo. Martens land. Jessie put oilcloth down by the door and around the stove.
[This would protect the wooden floors from the mess of winter, and from anything that fell from the iron stove.]
Tues. Oct. 6: Fine. Went up by Bert Taylors and put in two sluices and did some smaller work. Took my boot over to the shop and had three patches put in. Jessie did her ironing and fixed some tomatoes for mince pies.
Wed. Oct. 7: Fine. Went up by Bert Taylors and put down one sluice and did some other repairing. It was a very muddy job.
Thurs. Oct. 8: Fine. Went up above Leroy Mackeys and repaired a sluice. Put the horse in at Frank Lambretch and repaired road from Will Clark to E. VanValkenburg.
Fri. Oct. 9: Fair. Did not have any road work. Washed the windows in side of PO. Cleaned some in woodhouse. Shook some apples from Mrs. Kerr. Hired to Clarence Chamberlin to do carpenter work. Jessie and I hired a horse of Jim Miller and went up to my folks to day. Got there to supper. Married a year today.
[First anniversary! Worked at three different jobs in one day, or four if the woodhouse work was hired.]
Sat. Oct. 10: Fine. Helped Pa milk. Pa went to Mrs. Winans funeral. I stayed at home and visited with Jessie and Ma. Walked up to Merrickville in afternoon. Jessie has not felt very good today.
Sun. Oct. 11: Rainy. Went up to Father Hartwell’s this morning. James and Edna were there. We had a fine visit. Got back home at seven. Went up to see Will Whitney but he was not at home.
Mon. Oct. 12: Fine. Went to Adam Jackson and shingled for E. Chamberlin. It was new work but I got along pretty well. My arms ache like the toothache tonight. Jessie has felt pretty good today we went for a walk tonight.
Tue. Oct. 13: Hard freeze, fine. Finished shingling the house. Got done at dark. Am not as tired as I was last night. Mrs. Clark was here for dinner. Mrs. Gouldsmith called today.
Wed. Oct. 14: Fine. Went up to Mrs. Eveland’s and fixed the corn crib over. Did not get home until 9:15. Will was here a few minutes tonight.
Thurs. Oct. 15: Fine. Put in some sills in Hurd’s barns did not get the last one finished. Father and Mother was here today. I went to the barbers and got my hair cut. Jessie went out walking alone.
Fri. Oct. 16: Fine. Finished the sill in Hurd barn. Got through at eleven o’clock. Got Dr. White’s house scaffold then Clarence had to go away so I carried in my wood and split about half a cord. Put up a stand for the oil can. Jessie and I took a walk tonight.
Sat. Oct. 17: Fine. Put three rows of roofing on Dr. White’s house. Got about two thirds done. Will finish Monday. Mrs. Loveland and Anna Preston called today. Jessie has felt pretty well.
Sun. Oct. 18: Got up at 7:30 had breakfast took my bath. Went to church. The Supertendent of the Foreign Mission spoke. It was very nice. Father Mother and Ola came today. Ola is going to stay with us. We went up Bissel Hill for a walk tonight.
[Grandma’s sister would stay with her in this last month or so to take care of Grandma and help with her work.]
Mon. Oct. 19: Fair. Finished Dr. White’s house. Done a lot of patching of shingle. I did some shopping while Jessie and Ola went for a walk. Maud Brinkman and Julia Alexander called today. Mrs. Fowler and Miss Blair have called.
Tues. Oct. 20: Fine. Clarance had to go away to work. I saw Ike this morning and he told me to go up to Develin’s so I worked up there all day in the swamp getting out logs. Jessie Ola and I went for a walk. I saw Clarance and he has got to go back tomorrow so I have to get to find something for to do.
Wed. Oct. 21: Fine. Worked for Develin today all day. Ester Phelps called this forenoon. Miss Granger and Miss Smith called in the afternoon. Jessie feels pretty good.

Thus. Oct 22: Fine. Went over to Geo. Colbourns to work. Tore down his old barn except the frame. Pa was here for dinner today. He brought me a nice lot of apples. Sylvester and Mamie Wolcot were here today. Ola have gone to Geo. Breese to a dance.
Fri. Oct. 23: Fine. Worked over to Geo. Colbourns. Laid a floor in his barn and got the old barn nearly all torn down. Jessie and Ola went for a walk tonight. Today is my birthday. Got two nightshirts, two pair socks two handkerchiefs and a glass for my picture for presents.
[I think he means a picture frame.]
Sat. Oct. 24: Cloudy. Put paroid roofing on DeGray’s henhouse worked nine hours. Clarance paid me five dollars tonight. Jessie feels rather nervous we all went for a walk.
Sun. Oct 25: Cloudy. Ola went up home she walked up this morning started before we got up. I went to church and Sunday school. Mother and Will brought her home they got here about six. We three went for a walk.
Mon. Oct. 26: Rainy. Went over to Geo. Colburns this morning commenced 7:30 came home to dinner was off 3/4 hour. Pa came today with a load of coal. Father and Will came after dinner. Will staid all night. We worked until six tonight. We played flinch tonight.
[I remember playing Flinch with my parents and grandparents as a girl. It was a card game they felt ok about playing. As Methodists were very much against gambling, and since regular card decks were used for gambling, they didn’t play cards at all—except for Flinch, which used a different set of cards.]
Tue. Oct. 27: Fair. Worked for Colburn commenced at seven only took about half hour for dinner and quit at 5:20. I sided up the end of the wagon house it took me until long after dinner. After work I went up to the old place and got my cabbage. Will went home today.
[He had grown the cabbage, so he had a right to it.]
Wed. Oct. 28: Nice rain. Worked for Colburn all day. Commenced 7:20 and worked until six, off half hour for dinner. It has rained hard all day. I repaired the wagon house floor.
Thur. Oct. 29: Fair. Worked for Colburn all day. Repaired the old wagon house. Commenced 7:25 quit 5:30. Jessie and Ola went for a walk tonight I stayed at home and read the paper. Miss Smith and Miss Granger called today.
Fri. Oct. 30: Cooler. Stayed at home today and did up some odd jobs. Split Miss Granger wood for her. Father and Mother was down today. It is quite cold tonight we have got a coal fire. Mrs Mable Osterhout called today.
Sat. Oct. 31: Snowy. The first snow of any consequence I did not work today at all. Was home all day. We popped some corn and made candy and played flinch in evening.
